Former foreign minister Alexander Downer has discussed US President Donald Trump signing an onslaught of executive orders on day one of his presidency.

“It will reflect very badly on existing Democratic governments which make decisions very slowly and often very cynically just on the basis of opinion polls,” Mr Downer said.

“Donald Trump has … shown himself to be a decisive leader who having won the election and concluded the inauguration is dramatically getting on with the job.

“People will be very impressed with it.”
