Third Way Executive Vice President for Policy Jim Kessler has raised concerns over President Donald Trump’s motivations to “upend” America’s relationships with NATO allies.

US President Donald Trump has asked all NATO nations to increase their defence spending to 5 per cent of their GDP.

“I do agree it would be great if NATO spent more on national defence and maybe they will,” Mr Kessler told Sky News Australia.

“But tariffs on NATO, tariffs on Australia, forcing those countries to raise their taxes; I’m not sure that’s going to work to the benefit of the United States or the world economy.”
