A statue honouring the founder of modern-day Melbourne has been destroyed in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Vandals ripped the John Batman monument from its plinth near Queen Victoria Market and seemingly sawed it in half.

Crews arrived around 9:30am to remove the damaged statue using a crane and transport it to a secure location.

A memorial for soldiers who died in World War One was also defaced in Melbourne overnight, with protesters covering it in red paint.
